solafiammaMy Secret Santa has written me find you out, the most amazingly wonderful Trickyfish story ever! Trickyfish with not one but, count 'em, two Lances! Two! Two Lance's, dude! I'm telling you, it just doesn't get much better than that. Except that, you know what? It does!
The premise is total crack, for starters, such a brilliant concept for a story, and executed so elegantly and perfectly that I didn't experience even the faintest glimmer of the "oh-I-wish-I'd-thought-of-that" kind of thing that you sometimes get when a story doesn't live up to its promise. Because, boy, this story does, and then some.
It's so very, very lovely: clever, and tight and beautifully written, and there's humour and subtlety and poignancy, and, oh man, all these moments that pinched so fiercely at my heart. The characterization is brilliant, especially Lance, both young and older, because, dude, the Lance(s) in this story! So complex and layered and heartbreakingly, touchingly real.

I'm not going to get a chance to read any of the other stories for a while, which is making me insane, but maybe if I stay up ridiculously late tonight? Except, oh, yes, I'm going to have to do that anyway since I haven't wrapped one single present!
